The Ukrainian Carpathians are young mountains that have the approximate age of 25 mln years. They are situated in the center of European continent. The name of Carpathians is connected with present in the pre-Christian time tribe of Carps that lived on this territory over the rivers Pruth and Ocheret.

Carpathians fill the part of the Mountain chain for about 500 km. The highest peaks of the mountains are Goverla -2061m, Rebra - 2046m, Pip Ivan - 2026m, Petros - 2020m. All of them are situated in the Chornogorskiy mountain range that lays on the territory of Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpatska regions.

The second highest range is Beskidy located in the area of Zakarpatska and Lviv regions. The height of the mountains in this range is a little bit higher than Chornogorskiy one, in general for 1600 m. Slavsko ski resort is situated on the height of 750 m over the sea level - one of the best Ukrainian-European ski centres. There are several ski ways of international meaning in Slavske. The central ski way of the sport club "Dynamo" was used fro international contests not once. The landscape of the mountains is very variable that permits to ski not only for the professional skiers but also for the beginners. The natural location of Beskida and Gorgana slopes around mountain resort Slavsko has created a unique microclimate due to which pleasant not windy weather is present in all seasons and snow is present till April.

Slavsko is the center of ski sport, family skiing holidays, tourism and rest in a picturesque meadow of rivers Opir and Slavka in the level of 501 m over the sea. The first written mentioning about Lviv mountain area Slavske appeared in 1483. The name of Slavsko (Slavske, Slavsk) is connected with river Slavka or "Slavnie" (Brave) Svyatoslav warriors who were struggling with enemies in this area in 1015. Current Slavsk has a status of recreational zone and mountain ski resort. On its territory of 64 km2 lives 3700 people, 25 rest complexes are located. Slavsko in winter is paradise for ski and family ski rest lovers. There are 7 ski lifts on the mountain Trostyan with height of 1235m. You will be admired by fishing in summer. The history of tourism development and ski sport in the area of Slavsko mountain resort Carpathians started long ago, in XVIII century, when Galychina was a part of Austria-Hungarian Empire. Sold by the duke Pototskiy to another duke - Eugene Kinskiy -Skoliv lands together with all Tukholschina came to the hands of Gedel and Shmidt. Businessmen built rest houses here: picturesque nature, favourable climate attracted all highlife. Today everybody has the opportunity to have a rest here. Close and far away mountain tops, blue pine forests that are greatly located over the meadows, and cold water river - all these combine a unique soul of the Carpathian mountains. And this is not only a picturesque corner of wild nature, Carpathians is a prominent cultural region where the Ukrainian national features can show themselves in all their beauty providing us with ancient customs and traditions. The village Slavsk is the heart of Boykovschina and welcomes the true lovers of the Carpathians nature. Slavske spa ski resort is situated near the river Opir. This part of this region is covered with many legends and myths.
In a picturesque area among the slopes of the Ukrainian Carpathians quietly lays the village Slavsko. This is the region of ideal ecological purity as there is no any industrial enterprise in the radius of 100 km. This corner of the world is covered by the ancient legends. The son of Volodymyr the Great -Drevlyanskiy duke Svyatoslav is buried not far away. He died in this region in 1015 year. The soul of legendary Oleksa Dovbush is also believed to walk around the mountains.

These lands were the part of Galutsko-Volynske princedom and after its destruction came to the content of Great Lithuania princedom. Later this area became a part of Poland. The village was possessed by the Pototski and later by the Kinski families. The next owner was the Austrian baron Gredel. His palaces are still present in the towns of Skole and Maydan. There was no baron's property in Slavsk or Lviv region. It was an agrarian additional land of the Skoliv and Tukhlya areas. In 1878 the Austrian baron ordered to build a railway road from Striy to Mukachevo. It passed through Slavske.

The history of Slavsko as winter ski resort in Europe started in XVIII century. In XIX - it is already an outstanding mountain ski and family rest resort. Here such famous people as Franko, Gnatyuk, Trush, Kurilas, Novakivskiy, Kulchytska liked to rest and to improve their health. And in 20-30 years of XX century the ski jumps were built on the mountain Pogar. During the time of Soviet power Slavsko was famous as high class skiing resort in all Soviet Union. Here the seat way (1976) was constructed on the mountain Trostyan.

There is a church of Saint Virgin in Slavsk that was founded in 1901. It has a very interesting story. Close to the place where now the church stands used to be an old cemetery. Once during the strong wind a cross was torn away from the old wooden church present on the cemetery. It was thrown for a long distance. The cross was placed to the church again, but some time later it was torn away again and thrown to the same place. Local people decided to build a new church on this place 'pointed' by the cross. Now there is wooden bell place built from the wood from the old church. They say that wood is already 300 years old.

As well a famous Panteon - tomb of Ukrainian army warriors and victims of national movement of 40-50 years of XIX century- are present in Slavsko. Here you also can find a geological history memorial -the cave "Well".

But Slavsko mountain winter ski resort and summer vacation resort is famous not only in Lviv region, but also all around Ukraine and close countries not only due to historical pages of its essence but mainly to the presence of high quality winter ski sport facilities both for ski amateurs and professionals.

Right here the main figure for the skiers is situated - Trostyan mountain with the height of 1232 m. Of course you can not compare it to the well-known Elbrus or Goverla, but here you can find a diversity of ski ways and their comfortable location. This mountain is definitely legendary......

Trostyan mountain

Still during the times of occupation by Poland there was a ski lift on the mountain. As a pulling power was used a pare of horses. Probably it was the most economically efficient ski lift that was working on four cups of barley per day. Hence later the horses were changed to a diesel motor. At that time Trostyan mountain was mentioned by some ski lovers who took their skies to their arms and go up the mountain during half of the day with the purpose to make one way down.

In the middle of 60-ties of previous century two enthusiasts of skiing rest came there. It was some diplomatic coworker Pankiv, who was the representative of USSR in one of the Scandinavia countries and his friend with double education in law and physical training. The latter was the one who made unknown mountain one of the best ski resort area in the whole Union. Only in 2004 the street Gagarina in Slavsko mountain ski resort where the base building of "Dynamo" sport club stands, will be renamed to the street with his name.

Unfortunately you will not find a book about this person and you won't find anything in the archives. But the veterans of Dynamo and Slavsk old people remember Anatoly Arkhangelskiy with pleasant and kind word. They say that in the morning he used to walk around the local mountains in order to find the best place for the ski ways; he could find a mutual understanding with Slavsk aborigines, priests and Czech builders. As an ambition person he moved directly to his purpose.

As an example - the story of sport base Dynamo. This Lviv real estate was built and given for the exploitation in 1973. But at that time there was already a ski lift built in 1968 - the left one. Later in 1970 the right ski lift was constructed. In 1972 - the third one. Approximately at the same time the upper hotel Dynamo was created. The sportsmen already didn't have to go up by themselves. Firstly the hotel was wooden, but it was burnt and later the property in Lviv region reconstructed again as a brick one.

Currently this is one of the most developed European ski resort mountain that gives the opportunities for excellent skiing and as a result an ideal family skiing rest. Here one can find the best and the most interesting ski ways. You can go down to any side of the mountain - the slopes are divided into the Western, Northern, Central and Southern ones. There are ways of different levels of difficulty, including "black ways" (super difficult). There is a sport way on the central slope; that is why the access there is often restricted. Below the Western slope the "Great meadow for the beginners" is located - an ideal place for those who only start their skiing experience. There is a storage outbuilding just near the ski lift where you can leave some of your stuff. Near the ski ways there is a great majority of bars that will provide a tasty food, hot tea, aromatic coffee and definitely hot wine! This unusually tasty drink will warm you in a frosty weather and will bring you an excellent "sport" mood.

Polytechnic mountain

TThe second popular in Slavsko ski resort mountain. It is located at the entrance to the village. There are ski lifts of Lviv polytechnic and Lviv physics and mathematics institutes.
Polytechnic suits ideally for those who are in the process of studying how to ski or for the parents with their children who have wonderful skiing family holidays. The slope has a length of about 1 km. There are three ski lifts on this mountain, two short ones- "Polytechnic" and "Lviv", and another lift that brings to the top -"FMI". As on the top as near the lifts you will see a lot of cafes providing delicious hot snacks between ways down.

Pogar mountain

It contains three ski ways concerned to the amateurs and beginners. One can go down not only in day time but also at night as the ways are lighted. There are also tables and cafes on the mountain.

The slopes with length of 600-1000m, width -100-150m are quite plate that helps those wishing to study skiing to get these skills without any problems. There are two Czech ski lifts of 600 and 1000m.

How to get to Slavsko

The largest Europe mountain ski resort of Ukraine takes a very comfortable geographical location. If you go by your car then there is a way to Slavsk near the main highway Kyiv-Uzhgorord in 2 km from Skole. Reaching the distance of 20 km you will be in the center of your aim just in 20 min.

It is also very comfortable to reach the place by train as Slavsko spa ski area is located on the distance of 120 km from Lviv and in 60 km from Striy. All the trains with East-West direction have an obligatory stop in Slavsko. The trains that are available currently are: Moscow-Chop, Kyiv-Chop, Kyiv-Uzhgorod, Kyiv-Mukachevo, Kupyansk-Uzhgorod, Kharkiv-Uzhgorod, Kyiv-Vienna. The average cost for the train tickets from Kyiv to Slavske is 314 grn (57 USD) for luxe cabin and 75 grn (14 USD) for bed compartment. Here you also can find a well-equipped railway station where you can always get the tickets to all directions. The net of local trains is well developed - with direction to Lviv and Uzhgorod. There are in general 8-10 per day.

Close city to Slavske Lviv has an international airport that combines some cities of Europe with Lviv. For example you can use the flights from Barcelona, Warsaw, Vienna, Verona, Lissabon, Madrid, Moscow, Rome, and Frankfurt. The airports in these cities are the net stations that unite other important European airports. There is also an air access to the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Sympheropil.

You will be always met by the owners of cars and taxis who will easily take you to any part of the village or directly to ski ways.

Where to live

Rest houses, hotels -this part now in Slavsko mountain resort is very developed and possesses all amenities you need. You will live in a comfortable room with high quality facilities. Hotels here provide delicious cuisine. You can choose everything you want. As well there is a great choice of service - as sauna, restaurants, cafes, billiard rooms and so on.

Service and infrastructure

In general the service and infrastructure of Slavsko expanded and improved a lot during last years. Living in rest complexes, sanatoriums or private luxury ski apartments became much more comfortable. Now all the rest complexes in Slavsko have mostly high level. They all possess deluxe rooms for your comfort.

We can also easily talk about high service level "at home", especially in the ski houses on the central streets of the village. People build new outbuildings, saunas, connect gas and other amenities. The guest will be always treated with delicious traditional food. Except food and nice Lviv region real estate local people propose different kinds of entertainment as horse riding, hiking, excursions to historical places and many other things. In addition to all Slavsk recreational moments it is ought to admit local mountain Pogar is certified by the International federacy of ski sport. There are annual national ski contests held on the Pogar mountain. Some time ago the ways for freestyle, deltaplannering, spalom and other sport types were developed.
Due to the increase in tourism for a number of Carpathian mountain ski resorts, various renovation and regeneration projects are due to be started this year. The main project will happen at the ski resort located on Trostyan Mountain. So, far 40 million Dollars will be injected into the mountain European resort of Slavsk to improve infrastructure and ski facilities. The mayor of Slavsko, Michail Kripta, has stated that the project will boost tourism even more in the area and provide better catering for the increases in tourists already coming.
International grants are to be provided as part of the financing of the development, new tourists routes and trails etc. Michail Kripta the Mayor also reported that a government body with the purpose of developing the green 'Eco tourism' will also be founded.
In particular he added that the main investor of this project is an Austrian company. Currently, investors are negotiating on locations of new ski lifts. But Kripta has also mentioned that the government has given their consent for this project.
The duration of the project is expected to be three years and as well as new lifts, the old lifts will be renovated and extra seats added. This will increase the hourly capacity of each lift and will be particularly beneficial during the peak season (December through until February).
An important point is the extension of ski lifts down to the railway station in the resort town. This will mean that the tourists who come to Slavsko will be able to go straight to the ski lifts. These lifts, in turn, lead direct to many hotels. The need for a car in Slavsko will be minimal in three years time. Currently, there are taxis waiting for tourists at the railway.
Ukraine is currently undergoing a Ukrainian property boom which has been rippling through Eastern Europe for the past 7 years. The Carpathians of Ukraine, with their history, stunning scenery and good mountain ski resorts are now under the spotlight and beginning to be targeted by savvy investors and developers. Slavsko in particular has seen tourism increase the most in the last two years. There are 10 new hotels being built in the spa ski resort as the demand for tourism is so great, the whole resort and surrounding was reported completely occupied last year.

Slavsko national features

The most widespread customs in this Lvov region area is the Gutsul wedding and religious calendar holidays, in particular Chritsmas with special traditional songs -kolyadki and schedrivki (i.e Vasylya, Vodokhreschya, Melanky, Gutsul Rozkolyada, Easter).
One of the largest holidays for local people is sending of the Gutsul shepherds to the distance mountain meadows to graze cattle. It carries out in the middle of May and lasts till September. The conditions for living there for shepherds are quite difficult. The work lasts from the sunrise till the night. Three things characterize the life of Gutsul shepherd - brynza (typical cheese), trembita (national musical instrument) and vatra (the fire that is used for dancing around it of male Gutsul dance "Arkan").
The Gutsul wedding is just like fairy tale. Even nowadays the Gutsuls follow their traditions. Even now they wear national clothes, decorate their horses. The wedding is full of merry songs, dances, games, jokes. There are no weddings without embroidered towels, dresses and other clothes.
Preparation to the Orthodox Christmas starts here very early. I the morning of the 6 January women fire the "living fire" in the furnace and cook 12 special dishes. Kutya is the main dish on the table.

Next to Slavsko village Volosyanka is an ideal place for your rest!

Slavsk ski mountain area possesses a prominent place famous among good skiers. This is outstanding village Volosyanka. Some times ago this place took the name Polyanka. The village is located on the river Slavka and is situated just in several km from ski Europe resort Slavsko and in 35 km from Skole. The first historical mentioning about Volosyanka was already in 1572 year.

Here you can find a mountain Vysokiy Verkh where the lovers of skiing and family skiing holidays can show their skills in a perfect way. Near the mountain lays a comfortable rest Lvov region property complex that is equipped with all necessary amenities for high quality winter rest. There are several lifts on the territory of rest complex. Among them is the longest in this area pare-seat lift with the length of 2800 m and three ski lifts with the length of 700, 750 and 800 m. On the mountain there are several stations, as the Upper Station of pare-seat lift. It is located on the top of the mountain and possesses a restaurant with the same name as the mountain has. If you go lower you will find a natural memorial - the chink "Pysana Krynycya" (the well). There are also the middle stations - interchange stations 1 and 2- that also possess cafe "Pysana Krynycya" and the lowest station. This station is for skis renting, stuff storage and security.

In summer, spring or autumn you can organize an interesting and exciting vacation: climbing the mountains, gathering berries and mushrooms, excursions to the mountain lake and of course fishing. As well the seat lift provides coming up to the top of the Vysokiy Verkh and admire the local panoramic views. Warm season is extremely beautiful in Volosyanka. The nature breathes with useful gums of surrounded pine trees, mountain lake with crystal clean water is ready to wash your body, the sun is not hot but mild and pleasant. It is an excellent time for coming here with your family or friends.

The mountain resort area of rest complexes have a very developed infrastructure - bars, cafes-kolyby (kolyba - is a traditional Ukrainian type cafe), fast food type cafes, disco, sauna, Jacuzzi, swimming pools and of course different kinds of entertainment games - as billiard, table tennis.

Every year one can watch or even participate in the exciting bikers shows and jeepers contests that took place mostly in autumn, for example October.
